» feminist [the word] includes the idea that believing men and women to be equal, believing all people to be people is not a natural state — that we don’t emerge, assuming that everybody in the human race is a human, that the idea of equality is just an idea that’s imposed on us, that we are indoctrinated with, that it’s an agenda.

I love so much of Whedon’s work but I was so surprised and saddened by this speech.

So all of those women and transgender folk who believe in equality for the sexes but don’t identify as feminists, they’re just sexists in denial, eh Joss?

Fucking hell.

Okay so I’ve seen too many comments like this and I’m just going to address this right now. the entire point of his speech was to disassemble the word “feminist”, and to express his dislike for a word that supposedly captures the movement for women’s rights. He’s demonstrating that rights aren’t things to be given or earned, but something one’s born with. So before you misread, misunderstand, or misjudge, for God’s sakes, watch the actual speech first. I linked it for a reason.
